The Legal System of Ancient Athens
By Taj Wilkinson for NHD 2014
Ancient Athens. Usually noted for its mythology or its history. I intend to shine a light on a different part of Athens; one that is not usually explored in-depth. I mean the legal system. Specifically, the court system. This system was amazing for a number of reasons; it prevented crime, it gave power to the people and false power to the rich, and the biggest thing is, nobody knew about it. Everyone could be satisfied; People who wanted an oligarchy could be satisfied by the part that was just like an oligarchy. People who wanted a democracy could be satisfied with the parts that were just like a democracy. And everyone else was satisfied with everything. The system was perfect. It survived for over 300 years and through a series of takeovers, all without almost any changes.
Before you go and explore the site, I have a question for you. What other system do you know of (other than this one) that survived for this long with almost no changes? Think about that while you're looking around. I'll be waiting for an answer when we conclude.
